Don’t Dream It’s Over

I interviewed Crowded House drummer Paul Hester in 1991, for my now defunct music magazine RPM.  The news of his death is shocking, even if he had been out of the spotlight and out of mind for several years. Now, obviously, it would be naive and ridiculous for me to say that I understood the man from an interview conducted so many years ago, so I won’t go into the "he was happy, so how could he have done that" sort of speculation that always occurs when something like this happens. Does it even mean anything? I do know that after speaking with him, I said to myself that he was one of the nicest, most grounded celebrities I had ever talked to. I distinctly remember saying that to myself.  (If you don’t have any Crowded House cds, this one is a good place to start.)
